I went to the rally. I've lived here a long time, and I've never seen so many people on the National Mall. It was like a huge rock concert. Once you got anywhere near it, you were pressed up against people on all sides, shuffling along, hoping not to get crushed.

Overall impression was kind of vague -- like nobody knew for sure what they were there for. Middle-of-the-roadness is a funny thing to package at a rally, and after a while the oh-so-funny, self-deprecrating signs got kind of old. But the basic message of tolerance (ahem!) was the main takeaway for me. That seemed real and mostly what people were there for.

Otherwise, it was fun just because a bunch of people got together and sort of let loose with costumes and all kinds of crazy stuff.

Best sign I saw:

Less Sarah Palin!

More Para-Sailin!
